On May 27, 2005, time stood still in London. Big Ben, the 147-year-old clock that is famous around the world, mysteriously stopped for 90 minutes. The clock’s minute hand stood frozen at 10:20 PM and then suddenly began moving again at 11:50 PM. Engineers were baffled and unable to explain why the clock stopped. Big Ben is usually considered to be very reliable and rarely loses even one second.
Big Ben is world renowned for both its accuracy and its hourly chimes. It miraculously survived the bombing attacks on London during World War II. Despite the attack, it even managed to keep time to within one and a half seconds of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). However, Big Ben has not always been so reliable: snow caused the clock to ring in the New Year ten minutes late in 1962.
Although many people make the mistake of thinking that Big Ben is either the name of the clock itself or of the clock tower, it is actually the name of the 13-ton bell that strikes on every hour. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who ordered the clock’s construction. The official name for the tower that houses Big Ben is St. Stephen’s Tower.

One day while Sammy was walking home from school, a piece of paper blew into his face. He started to throw it but something caught his eye. The paper said “Close your eyes, turn around three times and say the word “Whistle Toot” out loud and the wonderful, magical, flying bicycle will be yours!”
At first Sammy thought this was silly. Just in case it might be true, he decided to follow the instructions on the paper. Sammy took a few steps after he turned around three times, said the words “Whistle Toot” and miracle of miracles, a bright shiny bicycle stood on the sidewalk in front of him.
Write an interesting story that tells about Sammy’s ride on the magical flying bicycle. Tell about where he went, what he saw, what happens while he’s on the flying bicycle, and how the story will end.

Kentucky Derby Lesson Plan
Homeschool Teacher - Lesson Plan & Newsletter
May 17, 2007
History
On this day in 1875, the first Kentucky Derby was held. Learn more about it here:

Journal
Create an advertisement for the Kentucky Derby. The advertisement can be a brochure, video, song, or radio/television/newspaper spot. Include relevant advertising information of who, what, where, when, why, and how.
Reading
And They’re Off!
Horse owner, Hal McGrath, entered two horses in the 1875 Kentucky Derby,
Chesapeake and Aristides (aire es tie deez). Chesapeake was considered to be the better of his two horses. Mr. McGrath’s plan was to have Aristides keep a fast pace during the first part of the race, so when he tired near the homestretch, his stable mate, Chesapeake, could come from behind and win.
The race began with Volcano in the lead, closely followed by Verdigris, Aristides
and McCreery. Chesapeake had started the race poorly. On the backstretch, Aristides moved into second, but Volcano continued to keep the lead for a short distance until Aristides moved into the lead. The rest of the field was spread out for over one hundred yards.
At the head of the homestretch, jockey Oliver Lewis on Aristides, looked for
Chesapeake to come ahead, but he was nowhere near the lead. Standing at
the head of the stretch, McGrath waved his hat toward the finish line
shouting, "Go on!" Immediately, Aristides moved out to win by one length,
with Volcano coming in a close second.
Oliver Lewis was one of thirteen African-American jockeys in the first Derby.
African-American jockeys won fifteen of the first twenty-eight Derbys.
Discussion Questions:
1. How many horses did Hal McGrath enter in the 1875 Kentucky Derby?
2. Name the horse(s).
3. What was Hal McGrath’s racing strategy?
4. Who was the jockey working for Hal McGrath?
5. Which horse did he ride?
6. How did Hal McGrath signal the jockey?
7. How far ahead was the winning horse?

Stamp Collecting Lesson Plan
Homeschool Teacher - Lesson Plan & Newsletter
May 2, 2007
History
On this day the first stamp collection was started.
Create a postage stamp honoring the accomplishments of your favorite person. On the back of your stamp, list important details, including dates and other facts about the person.
http://www.eduplace.com/monthlytheme/pdf/stamplg.pdf
Did you know that the people in our country suggest ideas for new stamp designs? Citizens can send their suggestions to the U. S. Postal Service's Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee which is made up of artists, historians, business people and stamp collectors. The committee selects the subjects they think most Americans would really enjoy. The Postmaster General makes the final decision.
If you would like to suggest a stamp idea, you can write a letter to the committee explaining why your subject should be chosen. You can send your suggestions to:

The centerpiece of May Day is the maypole. The maypole is a tree which is harvested from the woods, stripped of its branches, decorated with ribbons, and used as a symbol of the holiday. Often a dance is performed around the maypole.
If a young 5-foot tree (or sapling) grows 5 inches each month, how many months would it be before the sapling reached the minimum maypole height of 15 feet?
