The Pony Express

In 1860, sending mail was not as easy as it is today. In those days, many letters were sent by ship. Other mail was given to travelers passing through town on wagon trains. It could take months before a letter arrived –if it arrived at all.

In 1860, William Russell came up with a plan to carry mail between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California, in just 10 days, covering a distance of about 2,000 miles. He called his idea the “Pony Express”.

The Pony Express began on April 3, 1860 using young men to ride fast horses to deliver the mail. Along the way, stations provided fresh horses, food, water, and a place to sleep. Riders were paid about $25 a week to get the mail through, no matter what. The Pony Express advertised for “expert riders willing to risk death daily”. Risk to the riders came from Indian attacks, injuries, bad weather, or natural disasters.

The Pony Express was a huge success, however, another invention; the telegraph doomed the Pony Express. On October 24, 1861, a telegraph message was sent from San Francisco, California to Washington D.C. News could now be sent across miles in a matter of minutes. Two days later, the Pony Express made its last run.

The Pony Express lasted for only 18 months, but has captured its place in history and in the hearts of many.

Homeschool Math Challenge February 26

The whole route of the Pony Express ran from Missouri to California totaling approximately 2,000 miles. If the average rider rode 75 miles, how many riders did the entire route need? What percentage of the entire route did each rider cover?

How Much Would You Weigh on Another Planet

If you were to jump up as high as you can, gravity would pull you back down to the earth. If you were standing on another planet and jumped up, you might be able to jump higher, or maybe not as high.

How strong the pull feels depends on how big the planet is. On planets with more mass than earth, you would feel heavier, and on planets with less mass you'd feel lighter. (Mass just means the amount of "stuff" the planet is made of.

To figure out how much you would weigh on the other planets, multiply your weight here on Earth by the following numbers:

Moon 0.16
Mercury 0.28
Venus 0.90
Earth 1.0
Mars 0.38
Jupiter 2.34
Saturn 0.92
Uranus 0.79
Neptune 1.12
Pluto 0.04

Groundhog Day

When the first settlers arrived in the area known today as Punxsutawney (Pennsylvania) -- about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh -- they brought with them from Europe a centuries-old tradition known as Candlemas Day. On Candlemas Day, clergy would bless candles and distribute them to the people. The weather on Candlemas Day was considered an important indicator of the weather to come, according to an old English song:
If Candlemas be fair and bright,Come, winter, have another flight. If Candlemas brings cold and rain,Go, winter, and come not again.
Long ago, German peoples picked up on the Candlemas custom. If the sun shone on Candlemas Day, the Germans believed, the hedgehog would cast a shadow and another six weeks of winter was inevitable.
A HEDGEHOG STAND-IN
When the Germans arrived in the Americas, no hedgehogs were to be found. But another similar animal, the groundhog -- or woodchuck -- was here. Believed by the native Indians to be "a wise and sensible animal," the groundhog became a hedgehog stand-in.
So it is that the tradition was born. Today, we call each February 2nd "Groundhog Day." And when one thinks of Groundhog Day, one always thinks first of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania's best-known citizen -- Punxsutawney Phil! If Phil sees his shadow when he comes out of his burrow, we're in for six more weeks of winter weather. Or so the story goes.
