You watch as mushers cross the finish line of the Iditarod. Collecting some data, you note that 8 teams had 9 dogs, 3 teams had 12 dogs, 5 teams had 10 dogs, and 4 teams had 11 dogs.

Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can you?

In this book, Dr. Seuss uses sound words, or onomatopoeia. Think of as many sound words as you can and then write a cinquain poem.

Cinquain (pronounced "cin-kain") is a five-line poetic form, using a wavelike syllable count of two-four-six-eight-two.


Line 1: One or two words that tells what the poem is about—this might be "Hallway," "Monkeys," or "Whales"

Line 2: Two words—one that describes the kind of sound (loud, soft, etc.) and the sound word itself

Line 3: Three sound words related to the subject


Line 4: Four to six words describing the sound and using sound words

Line 5: One or two words that rename what the poem is about (a synonym)

Yellowstone National Park is a vacation destination with many visitors each year. Using the information you have learned, create a travel brochure for the park.

Be creative with the brochure and make sure you include the following:

• General overview of the park, including its location
• Park history
• Description of unique geological features
• Description of animals and vegetation found in the park
• Things to do and see in the park
• Park hours and fees
• Illustrations or photographs

• Kilauea, Hawaii
• Pinatubo, Philippines

For each volcano, keep track of the following information:

• Type of volcano
• Date of most recent (or most significant) event
• Casualties
• Other measures of impact
• Eruptive force
• Magma composition (silica and water vapor)

Math Challenge March 1


Your friend shows you an article from a recent Time Magazine for Kids. It says:

On a recent class trip to Yellowstone National Park, a student was chased to the top of a very slippery tree that was thirty-six (36) feet high. The teacher tried to save the student but it was no use, so she used her cell phone to call in the park rangers. One quick thinking ranger, immediately dispatched a helicopter to rescue the student. He told the teacher it would take exactly twelve (12) minutes for the helicopter to arrive, drop a ladder, and help the student climb up to safety.
Meanwhile, back at the scene, the Bear began to climb the tree. It climbed up eight (8) feet in one minute time but the next minute the bear slid back down the tree four (4) feet. This pattern of going up eight (8) feet up in one minute and sliding back down four (4) feet the next minute continued.



Unfortunately, the bottom of the article got chewed off by your friends new puppy. Use your math skills and math materials available to you in your classroom (paper, pencil, ruler, manipulatives...) to figure out whether the student survived or not!

Rewrite the missing end of the article explaining whether the student survived or not. Make sure that you include an explanation of your how you figured this out, an detailed picture to illustrate your thoughts, and your reasoning why you figured it out the way you did.
